Walker frequently reports on medical and psychological issues, writing about camps for burned children, AIDs and family therapy, schools for migrant children, a deaf street gang in the South Bronx, a blind mountain climber, a school for deaf-blind children, as well as many articles and memoir pieces on deafness.
Some of the profiles she has written include those of Candice Bergen and Marlee Matlin.
She frequently contributes book reviews, fiction and essays to a number of journals and magazines, including The New York Times, The Hopewell Review, Esquire, among other publications.
She is the recipient of several fellowships, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and a Marguerite Higgins Reporting Award.
